I noticed that he noticed me, and I was “smitten.” His expression was analytical and I felt a bit scared, but also happy. His background of being from Hell’s Kitchen was apparent, because he did not seem to care about himself. I cannot remember how he got my number, but he did. All I remember is standing outside his apartment door and he was telling a friend by phone that he was expecting “a beautiful young woman” at any minute. All I can say is he had a powerful presence but was not vain. He might be the most perfect man I ever met, because he wasn’t self absorbed at all. The next week he went to teach at a New England school and wrote me the most beautiful letters. I never saw him again. And I guess I lost those letters. I noticed that his niece would like to know more about him, and all I can say is he was a product of his harsh upbringing though he never complained, and he was very self sufficient and never complained about his childhood. My husband Parker Whedon was very much like him. He was 22 years older than I and never criticized me. For a woman brought up in the South who was a debutant, it was a miracle that I met him at all. He is on the top of my list of other celebrities I have met (Art Buchwald and Buddy Hackett, both of whom made me laugh). I met Art when he came to give the graduation speech at UNC Greensboro where he said he never graduated from high school even. One of my housemates told her bf that I wanted to meet Art and lo and behold I saw Art coming down the sidewalk and he said, “I hear you wanted to meet me!” My other favorite comedian I met when I was working in an exclusive shop called The World of Fragrance and Buddy Hackett walked in with his preppy friend and I said, “Why Ronnie Curry, I haven’t seen you since college!” He said, “I’m not Ronnie Curry.” And then it dawned on me who he was! The best part of this meeting was when he started talking about how overpriced everything was in the shop. We talk about his dear friend Terry Thomas who had died that was in The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. Thank you for listening to this long story. I was working on getting my teaching certification and was really surprised when he called me. I got my confidence up and went to his room. He was so warm and kind and also, in my opinion, handsome. While standing outside of his room, I heard him tell someone on the phone that he was expecting an attractive young woman (me)! We talked about life and art, and he told me he was getting ready to go to New England to teach a summer program. While he was there, he wrote me two very introspective letters. Though I never saw him again, I feel honored to have met him at all. The leading picture is as I remember her when I apprenticed with her, 1961 to 1963. She and Charles Stegeman came to visit me in Camden Town, London, back in the 197O's, but after she left Charles and returned to Brussels I completely lost track. Nevertheless I have always tried to keep to the spirit of her teaching, and yes, for me as well, “Art never leaves me, even on holiday.” http://www.judithclute.co.uk/Judithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00722706629767236473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7100017842574074859.post-72559287744440128032013-11-24T17:52:31.320-08:002013-11-24T17:52:31.320-08:00I took "Modern Theories of Art" with Jon...I took "Modern Theories of Art" with Jonathan at MSU mid-80's. Wonderful, wonderfully stimulating experience! He decided to analyze Shakespeare's "The Tempest". He started by playing - from memory - Beethoven's Tempest Sonata! Stunning! The piano was very old and dry; the keys went flying all over the place! Jonathan calmly reached down, picked them up and continued. He was a concert-class pianist and told us he had trained as a cantor, but he never got to sing. Having graduated as a physicist, in the middle of one class, he asked me to explain Einstein's Theory of Relativity to the class ... as it was a modern theory that had had a strong impact on art. I did as he was very warm and very appreciative. I never saw the hard edge others have mentiined ; he was always appreciative and encouraging. He was, however, a great opponent of form following function and argued strongly against the notion that, for example, that only wood could represent wood or metal metal. He felt no problem with using plaster to represent wood or metal or flesh. I sought him out the following semester to see what he was teaching only to hear he had died ... and few details of how or when. I was deeply saddened, but still remember him warmly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7100017842574074859.post-35731970785420309992013-10-02T12:05:16.257-07:002013-10-02T12:05:16.257-07:00i'm Peter AGOSTINI'S niece and would love ...i'm Peter AGOSTINI'S niece and would love to hear stories about him and his art. i live in nyc near Union Squarewww.yourexpertnation.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7100017842574074859.post-41359733065508512072013-09-29T17:17:21.584-07:002013-09-29T17:17:21.584-07:00Peter is my Great-Great Uncle, and I have so enjoy...Peter is my Great-Great Uncle, and I have so enjoyed learning about him through accounts of his former students and friends. Whether it be illustration of an existing work (Delacroix/Goethe, Dore/Dante); or music inspired by poetry (Baudelaire/Duparc, Hesse/Strauss); or opera (Shakespeare/Verdi, Berlioz, Britten, etc.); – examples abound of using another medium to react to, pay homage to, or enhance the written word. In the case of Hersch and Mazur, it seems each artist felt a deep connection to the other, and they shared the sense that their influences on one another’s work were mutual and profound.

This is a most interesting addition to the Artist Profiles Project; one that expands the scope of the existing material, and opens new lines of inquiry and discussion. Thank you for sharing this essay.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
