Fritz Janschka: A Short Video

Vienna-born artist Fritz Janschka was a founding member of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, whose work, which includes drawings, paintings, printmaking and sculpture, is often inspired by literature, especially that of James Joyce.  He taught printmaking at Bryn Mawr College for over 30 years before retiring to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he currently lives.

In this 10-minute video slideshow, journalist Joe Scott combines images of Janschka’s work from as far back as 1947 with stories and commentary by Janschka himself.

  1. So good to see and hear Fritz Janschka again! I was one of his students at Bryn Mawr back in the 70's - becoming a fine art major when BMC added that major. I have good memories of working with him in the studio, learning about printmaking and other art. I was only slightly aware of his own art work - my focus at the time was on mine -but remember him showing us his work on the Joyce alphabet, then in progress, and his studies of unusual flowers. Thanks for sharing this video! Fritz sounds just as I remember him. I'm glad to learn more about his work.
